To open an HTML file online, drop it onto an online HTML viewer such as the HTMLtoURL.dev viewer. The page renders instantly in your browser — with CSS and JavaScript — and the file is never uploaded. To let someone else open it, publish it as a URL instead.
Three things "open online" can mean
| You want to… | Use | Uploads the file? |
|---|---|---|
| See the page rendered | Online HTML viewer | No |
| Read or edit the code with a live preview | HTML preview editor | No |
| Let another person open it | HTML file to URL | Yes — it is hosted |
Opening a file in the online viewer
- Go to the HTML viewer.
- Drag the
.htmlfile onto the drop area (or click and pick it). - Read the rendered page. Switch to Phone or Tablet to check responsive layouts, or Full screen for a clean view.
- Open Show / edit the HTML code to inspect or change the source; the view updates as you type.

Why use an online viewer instead of double-clicking?
- Locked-down computers. School and work machines sometimes block opening local files in the browser, or open them in an editor.
- Unknown files. The viewer runs the page in a sandbox that cannot read your other files, cookies or this site's storage.
- Mobile checks. One click shows the page at phone width, which double-clicking cannot.
- Chromebooks and tablets where file associations are limited.
When the file looks incomplete
A single .html file often depends on others: a stylesheet, images, scripts. Online viewers — and any browser — can only show what is inside the one file you gave them. If the layout is unstyled or images are broken, the missing pieces were in the original folder. Ask for the whole folder (or ZIP) and publish it with ZIP to URL to see the page complete.
Email (.eml/.mht) and saved pages
Files ending in .mht/.mhtml are "web archives" that bundle a page and its images; Chrome and Edge open them directly, online viewers generally do not. .eml files are emails — open them in a mail client, or extract the HTML part and paste it into the viewer.
